Best Self Tanner for Pale Skin
On pale skin, the best self-tanner is one you can control. You want to start light, see how the color develops and build it up a day at a time, instead of waking up two shades too dark. Our Clear Vegan Mousse is colorless and fragrance-free and lasts up to 15 days. The Tinted Express Mousse shows you where you applied it, and you choose how dark it gets by when you rinse.
- Fragrance-free options
- Lasts up to 15 days
- 30-day money-back guarantee
Key takeaways
- Start light and build: you can reapply the next day for a deeper tan.
- Tinted Express Mousse: rinse after 3 hours for a light tan on fair skin.
- Clear Vegan Mousse and the Self-Tanner Spray are colorless and fragrance-free.
- A self-tan has no SPF. Keep wearing sunscreen.
What to look for in a self-tanner for pale skin
- Control over the depth. Fair skin shows every shade of difference, so you want a formula you can stop early or build up gradually.
- An even application. On pale skin a missed patch is easy to spot. A tinted formula, or a mitt with a clear one, makes it easier to see where you've been.
- Color that looks like a tan, not orange. Orange usually comes from too much product at once, dry spots soaking up extra color, or going darker than your skin can carry. Starting light avoids most of it.
- A gentle formula. Our Clear Vegan Mousse is made for all skin types, including fair and sensitive skin, and is fragrance-free.

How to self-tan pale skin without looking orange
- Exfoliate the day before. Dry, flaky patches grab extra color. An exfoliating glove does the job.
- Moisturize only the dry spots. Knees, elbows, ankles, wrists, hands and feet. Leave the rest of your skin clean and dry.
- Use a mitt. Pump a small amount of mousse onto the Applicator Mitt and apply in circular or long sweeping motions. Use only what's left on the mitt for hands and feet.
- Go light the first time. With the Tinted Express Mousse, rinse at 3 hours. With the Clear Mousse, rinse after 4 to 5 hours. You can always add more the next day.
- Stay dry while it develops. No shower, sweat or water until it's time to rinse. Then rinse in lukewarm water, without soap, and pat dry.
Self-tanner or body makeup?
A self-tanner gives you color, but it doesn't cover anything. If you also have veins, scars or spots, a tan won't cover them, and it can make dark spots darker. For those, use body makeup for legs on top on the days you want them covered. We explain why in Do self-tanners make dark spots darker?
