Makeup to Cover Age Spots
Age spots, sun spots and sun damage are darker than the skin around them, so covering them takes makeup with enough pigment that matches your skin, not the spot. Bombshell covers spots on your legs, arms, chest and hands, and our Face Foundation + Concealer does the same on your face. Both come in 91 shades and are waterproof once they dry.
- Face and body
- Waterproof once dry
- Free shade exchange
Key takeaways
- Match the skin around the spots, not the spots themselves.
- Bombshell for legs, arms, chest and hands. Face Foundation + Concealer for the face.
- Self-tanner doesn't cover age spots. It can make them darker.
- Waterproof once dry. Body makeup stays on for 2 to 3 days.
Can self-tanner cover age spots?
No, and it can make them stand out more. A self-tanner darkens all of the skin it touches, including the spots, which are already darker. You end up with a tan and spots that are still there, sometimes deeper. We go into the details in Do self-tanners make dark spots darker?
What does work is makeup on top. If you want a tan too, self-tan first, let it develop, and then cover the spots with makeup that matches your tanned skin.
How to cover age spots with makeup
- Start with clean, dry skin, with no lotion or oil on the area.
- Pick the shade of the skin around the spots. If you're unsure, try a few shades at home with the TRY IT ALL Sample Pack.
- Tap, don't rub. Put a small amount on the brush or your fingertip, tap it over the spots and blend the edges out. Thin layers look more like skin, especially on mature skin.
- Add a second thin layer on the darkest spots once the first one is dry.
- Let it dry for 5 to 10 minutes, then press a tissue on it. If it comes away clean, you're set.
If your legs have a lot of spots plus uneven tone, it's quicker to spray the whole leg with the Leg Makeup Spray first, then use Bombshell on the darkest spots.
Where to use it
- Face: Face Foundation + Concealer, 91 shades, waterproof and transfer-resistant. Use it all over for an even base and dab a little more on the spots.
- Hands: Bombshell with the Kabuki Brush. Hands get washed and rubbed more than anywhere else, so expect to touch them up more often.
- Chest and arms: Bombshell covers sun damage, freckles and redness on the chest and upper arms well, so you can wear sleeveless and low necklines.
- Legs: Bombshell on individual spots, or the spray for the whole leg. See body makeup for legs.
